Mouth Guards for Sports

sports_guard1If your child plays sports, ask your child’s dentist about a mouth protector or mouth guard to help prevent dental injuries. A mouth guard also acts as a cushion to prevent broken jaws, neck injuries and concussions. If you encourage your child to wear a mouth guard, it will become a good safety habit, like wearing a seat belt in the car or a helmet when riding a bicycle.

Three Types of Mouth Guards

There are 3 basic types of mouth guards that are available for protecting your child from various injuries. Semiahmoo Dental recommends the custom-fitted protection as they offer the best fit.

  • Stock mouth guards are inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. They can be bulky and can make breathing and talking difficult.
  • Boil and bite mouth guards are available at many sporting goods stores. They can offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors and are softened in warm or hot water, according to manufacturer’s instructions. By softening the mouth guard, it can more easily take to the shape of your mouth.
  • Custom-fitted mouth guards are made especially for you. They are more expensive than the other types, but they offer a better fit. At Semiahmoo Dental Centre we make professional quality mouth guards for any sport on-site to make sure they are the best fit and ensure the greatest protection for you.
