General Dentistry FAQs
At Semiahmoo Dental Centre, we understand that you may have a lot of questions about your oral health and the services we offer. We have put together some frequently asked questions, please contact our South Surrey Dental office at (604) 536-6711 if you require more information from one of our knowledgeable staff.
Q. ARE YOU OPEN ANY SATURDAYS AND EVENINGS?
A. Yes, we are, you can check out our contact page and see all the days and times available to suit your schedule.
Q. DO YOU OFFER TEETH WHITENING AND IS IT BETTER THAN AN OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCT?
A. Yes, we do a customized teeth whitening kit for our patients to take home and provide full instructions in the office. Our opinion is that the OTC products do not provide the most superior result, offer no ongoing supervision and can be more costly over the length of treatment.
Q. WHY DO I HAVE TO BRUSH AND FLOSS AND HOW MANY TIMES A DAY?
A. The bacteria that causes both gum disease and cavities need to be manually disrupted on a daily basis. We advise our patients to brush minimally twice a day and floss at least once a day. Our hygiene department can help review your techniques to make sure you are doing the best job at home.
Q. WHAT TYPE OF TOOTHPASTE DO YOU RECOMMEND?
A. There are many different brands, and it is an individual preference. It is recommended to use one recognized by the Canadian Dental Association. Our hygiene department can recommend a toothpaste if you have specific needs.
Q.WHEN SHOULD A CHILD HAVE THEIR FIRST DENTAL APPOINTMENT?
A. Call the office to book an appointment within six months of the eruption of the first tooth or by one year of age unless, you think there is a problem, then please call right away.
Q. WHY DO SOME DENTISTS RECOMMEND SEEING THE HYGIENIST EVERY 3 TO 4 MONTHS?
A. How often you go depends on your oral health needs, the degree of tartar build-up and if you have gum pockets that need to be evaluated more frequently. Gum disease can lead to bone and tooth loss and has been linked to other health concerns.
Q. WHY DO I NEED TO COME FOR REGULAR CHECK-UPS?
A. To detect small cavities, tooth fractures and gum disease before they become problematic and also to have a neck and oral cancer check. Ask yourself the following questions.
- Do I brush twice a day using a fluoridated toothpaste and floss every day
- Do I eat a well-balanced diet and limit sweet and sticky foods
- Is my overall health good
- Do I smoke
- Do I have a history of gum disease and cavities
Q. DO I NEED TO HAVE DENTAL X-RAYS?
A. Our office takes only the necessary x-rays required to provide the best diagnosis for your dental health and are a vital tool to ensure that small problems do not develop into bigger ones.
Q. WHAT CAUSES BAD BREATH?
A. It can result from a less than optimal oral health or be systemic. Brushing your teeth and tongue every day along with flossing is vital. Have regular dental checkups so that your dentist can evaluate the problem and make any recommendations.
